BBC iPlayer tips, tricks, advice and help

IPLAYER RUNS ON WHAT DEVICES?
The primary iPlayer website is optimized for Linux, Windows, and OS X PCs. Although some older devices are no longer supported, there are iPlayer apps for iOS and Android, Xbox 360, Wii, PS3 and PS4, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone 8. We provide information on which iPlayer features are compatible with which mobile devices, as well as a list of iPlayer devices that are no longer supported.

Chromecast is also compatible with iPlayer, and the iPad app supports AirPlay with Apple TV. Additionally, numerous Smart TVs and set-top boxes support iPlayer natively. BT Vision, YouView, Freesat, Freeview, TalkTalk, Virgin Media, Sky on Demand, and Now TV are among the services that are compatible with iPlayer.

Is everything available on BBC IPLAYER HD?
No. The BBC One HD and Two HD shows are available, but only on a few devices and via the web. There will be a View In HD option available wherever HD programming is available.

Getting Started With IPLAYER On the BBC’s website at www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer, you’ll find the following four main sections: Featured, which highlights the programs that the BBC thinks are more interesting to you; Most Watched, which indicates what other people are watching; TV channels, including non-BBC channels, and an alphabetical list of TV shows.

You can sort that section by category; for instance, clicking Comedy will narrow the list down to only shows about comedy. A link to sign in will also be at the top of the screen. If you don’t already have a BBC ID, you can use the same link to register for free. Once you’ve signed in, you can use the iPlayer’s personalization features, like favorites and preferences by region, so we recommend using this.

How to watch live TV on IPLAYER: Go to the TV Channels section, click on Today, and then click on the channel icons on the left. It’s important to remember that if you use iPlayer to watch live broadcasts but don’t have a TV, you need a TV license. You will be taken to the program’s page, which is dominated by a video window, when you click on it.

Within a few seconds, the program begins, and the standard transport controls can be seen at the clip’s bottom if you hover your mouse over it: a play/pause button, a progress bar that can be used to pause the program, and a tiny LIVE icon. The icon for viewing in full screen mode is located in the center, directly above the program bar. = HOW TO WATCH CATCH-UP TV ON IPLAYER You can use the search box at the top right of the page, the Most Popular section, the A-Z of TV Programs section, or the channel schedules to find shows that have already aired. For instance, to watch Newsnight from last night, go to TV Channels, click BBC Two, click Yesterday, and then scroll down to Newsnight. Some programs, like Hollywood films, won’t be available if the BBC doesn’t have the internet rights for them. However, most programs are available for a month after their first broadcast.
