Saudi conjoined twins successfully separated

Saudi conjoined twins who were joined at the hip and shared the spinal cord and its membranes were successfully separated by a specialized surgical team in a seven-stage, seven-hour procedure that involved 28 doctors, experts, nurses, and other medical professionals.

Following instructions from King Salman, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the surgery was carried out in Riyadh on Thursday.

According to Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, advisor to the Royal Court and supervisor general of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), this procedure was the 53rd to be carried out as part of the Saudi program to separate conjoined twins. He also heads the medical and surgical team for the surgical separation of conjoined twins.

In 32 years, the Saudi initiative has been able to care for 127 twins who were joined at the hip from 23 friendly nations. The program focuses on Saudi Arabia’s novel approach to humanitarian assistance, particularly in the medical field.

The medical team expressed its profound gratitude to King Salman and the Crown Prince for the significant assistance provided to the Saudi effort to separate conjoined twins. The twins were moved to the pediatric intensive care unit after the muscles and nerves were checked to ensure their safety and to cover the wounds. Additionally, they wished the twins a speedy recovery.
