Sri Lanka top court allows proceedings against former president

The rights group that brought the case against former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said in a statement on Friday that the highest court in Sri Lanka has granted permission for proceedings.

In addition, the court agreed to allow the country’s former prime minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa, as well as its former finance minister and two former central bank governors, to be prosecuted.

Transparency International, a rights group, filed the case to hold the island nation’s leadership accountable for its worst financial crisis in more than seven decades.
